π Fall is in the air π—and around here, that means apple orchards, pumpkin patches, hayrides, and all the cozy family traditions that come with the season. The kids are already asking when we’re going apple picking, and honestly, I love that it has become “our thing” every fall. There’s something special about bundling up in sweaters, crunching through the leaves, and watching the kids light up when they find the perfect apple or pumpkin.
Apple picking is one of those simple outings that turns into a full day of fun. Many farms offer so much more than apples: tractor rides, corn pits, playgrounds, petting zoos, and of course, those sweet fall treats that taste even better after a little outdoor play. And pumpkin patches? They’re the heart of the season—because nothing says fall quite like loading a wagon with pumpkins and gourds for decorating, carving, or baking.

π Family Tips for a Successful Fall Picking Day
- Bring a wagon or stroller – Great for hauling pumpkins, apples, or tired kids.
- Dress in layers – Mornings can be chilly but afternoons warm up quickly. Boots are helpful if fields are muddy.
- Pack wipes and water bottles – Sticky apple hands and thirsty kids are guaranteed.
- Check farm hours before heading out – Weather and crop conditions can change hours and activities.
- Plan extra time – Most orchards have more than just picking—hayrides, corn pits, and play areas make the outing last longer.
- Bring cash – While many farms take cards, some food stands or activities are cash-only.
π₯§ Easy Apple Coffee Cake Recipe
One of my favorite ways to wrap up a fall outing is baking with the apples we just picked. This simple apple coffee cake comes together quickly and makes the house smell amazing — perfect for an after-school snack or cozy weekend breakfast.
Ingredients:
2 cups peeled, chopped apples (Honeycrisp or Haralson)
1 cup sugar
½ cup butter, softened
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp salt
Topping:
½ cup brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp melted butter
Instructions:
βͺοΈ Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13 pan.
βͺοΈ Cream butter and sugar; mix in eggs and vanilla.
βͺοΈ Stir in dry ingredients, fold in apples.
βͺοΈ Pour batter into pan, mix topping, and sprinkle on top.
βͺοΈ Bake 35–40 minutes, until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
βͺοΈ Serve warm with coffee for mom (or with ice cream for the kids π).
For me, these orchard and pumpkin patch trips aren’t just about bringing home apples or pumpkins—they’re about the little moments with my kids that I know they’ll remember. The way they race to climb hay bales, the pride on their faces when they find “their” pumpkin, or how they crunch into an apple right off the tree (even though most farms say no eating in the orchard). Those are the memories that stick.
If you haven’t gone yet, I promise it’s worth it—pack some snacks, throw an extra sweater in the bag, and make a day of it. These simple fall traditions are the ones that end up meaning the most to our families—and they’re the memories I know I’ll treasure for years.
